PiGuard

Improving the digital security of independent media and human rights organizations by developing and deploying censorship-resistant WireGuard-based VPN connection services.

VPNs have been used by activists, bloggers and journalists for years to secure online communication and circumvent censorship. However, it is quite easy to shut-down a service just by blocking the IP address of the server providing the VPN tunnel service. Utilizing WireGuard’s “IP Roaming” feature, which allows a device to automatically connect to a new VPN server in case the previous server got blocked, this project seeks to embed WireGuard in small and cheap servers to create a wifi hotspot allowing connected users to benefit from an encrypted connection. The project plans to deploy the technology with independent media and human rights organizations in Africa, MENA, and Eastern Europe - thereby bolstering their digital security and enabling more censorship-resistant connections.
