Sandra is a recognized leader specializing in community building, strategic planning, DEI and innovation.
One of the first Latinas to occupy a leadership position in the field of public interest technology, she served as the first Director of Communications for Wikipedia, and has served on the board of various open source and social justice organizations throughout the years. She is recipient of the US Latino Award by the Spanish Government, and has conducted over 400 expert interviews on the future of journalism, culminating in a content series for publications like PBS Mediashift and Columbia Journalism Review. She also conducted some of the earliest research on how technology and SEO reinforced stereotypes, paying particular attention on for the US Latina population.
Sandra is currently head of Team CommUNITY, a community-based membership network that brings together digital defenders from across the globe fighting surveillance, censorship, and other issues sitting at the intersection of human rights and technology. She believes solidarity across regions and movements is the only step forward to combatting the issues sitting at the intersection of human rights and technology.
