With WEPN, you can set up your own trusted and secure VPN service and protect your data from malicious third parties.
WEPN is a small, self-hosted, home Virtual Private Network (VPN) server that can be used easily out-of-the-box to benefit non-technical users in areas experiencing internet censorship. Unlike other VPN offerings, WEPN is held outside of the repressive region and runs on the home network of a host with access to the free internet. With WEPN, hosts can share their own internet connection with family and friends in heavily censored countries, allowing them to freely access the open internet. This open-source VPN service is stealthier than commercial VPNs, which can become popular and thus easier to block by censors. Since WEPN service is only shared with the user and a handful of other people, it draws less attention than popular options.
Initial funding from OTF helped streamline the user experience and reduce centralized dependencies on WEPN servers to enhance privacy and security, and added more internet freedom and circumvention tools to the platform.
The most recent engagement will build enhancements to the tool based on recent usability and security audits.
