Tails provides a platform to solve many digital threats by “doing the right thing” out of the box by default, protecting even less tech-savvy users from the most likely and highest impact risks.

Tails is a portable operating system that protects against surveillance and censorship. It uses the Tor network to protect a user’s privacy online, and leaves no trace on a shut down computer, making it a secure option for users at risk of government surveillance and censorship to access the web. OTF previously supported the development of this privacy and anonymity-enhancing operating system.

As Tails is built on top of many open source technologies, it requires ongoing maintenance to remain functional with ongoing technology updates and improvements. OTF’s current funding includes supporting essential day-to-day maintenance, upgrades, and improvements, project management and accounting, acting on user-feedback, and investing in long-term sustainability through simplifying workflows and adding fundraising capacity.
