The Surveillance Studies Network biennial conference is one of the leading international surveillance conferences. This project supports the establishment of a Majority World track at the conference to expand the scope of surveillance studies to include non-Northern / Western discourses and practices. This entails bringing members from the region to the conference and ensuring issues concerning the most vulnerable communities are meaningfully included in the agenda.
The project will also launch a network to promote skill sharing and collaboration among surveillance researchers across the Majority World, translate and open source valuable resources into minority languages, and set in place strong support systems to aid collaboration and advance our understanding of repressive surveillance. While regional networks carrying out research on surveillance exist, they are not connected at a global level to exchange ideas, build support networks, and disseminate the outcomes of their projects. The Surveillance in the Majority World Research Network will fill this gap, facilitating spaces of exchange and ensuring resources and knowledge are publicly accessible for all involved.
