The Ugandan government’s implementation of internet censorship is often used as a measure to control the flow of information and curb the spread of dissenting views or opposition narratives. These restrictions limit the ability of journalists to report on sensitive issues and hold those in power accountable, stifling independent journalism and the dissemination of objective views.
In this climate, cyber attacks against journalists have become prevalent, including the hacking of devices and social media accounts, data theft, and surveillance through malware and spyware.
To address this issue, Human Rights Network Journalist Uganda (HRNJ-Uganda) will provide journalists and media houses with training on secure communications and other best practices, and will develop an easy-to-use digital security handbook for reporters.
