STARTTLS Everywhere is a program that system administrators can use to quickly—and easily—secure and authenticate connections between email servers.
While email is used and relied on by one third of the world’s population, it remains very vulnerable to a variety of surveillance methods. STARTTLS is one of the solutions developed for mail providers to exchange emails securely, but even when it is used, repressive actors can easily disable it, and it lacks a mechanism to ensure emails are delivered securely. STARTTLS Everywhere aims to solve these problems by creating a program that system administrators can use to easily configure the infrastructure that receives and delivers email to do so in a more secure manner.
STARTTLS began as an EFF project in 2014 in a moment when the technology community banded together to push transport encryption as a crucial necessity.
