Measurement Lab (M-Lab) provides the largest collection of free, open internet performance data on the planet. As a consortium of research, industry, and public-interest partners, M-Lab is dedicated to providing an ecosystem for the open, verifiable measurement of global network performance.
OTF is supporting M-Lab to host Open Measurement Gatherings (OMG) that bring together representatives from IODA, Censored Planet, M-Lab and OONI—internet measurement groups with an established practice of working in the open to collaborate and converge on best practices, methodologies, and complementary approaches for the collecting of data around internet censorship.
For the open censorship measurement groups to support the internet freedom communities in the most urgent times of need, coordination is essential. OMG offers an opportunity to better understand each other’s work, build trust, and share knowledge that could result in improved methodologies.
In the past, OTF supported M-Lab to build a new software client for testing by developing a browser extension or similar software integration for one or more of the popular open source browsers. The tool enables any user to become a regular and reliable part of the M-Lab community. It also gives researchers and policymakers a tool for real-time monitoring of censorship activity with a capability to zoom in on particular user communities on particular networks in particular geographies.
