LEAP is a non-profit dedicated to giving all internet users access to secure communication.
LEAP promotes freedom of expression online by allowing people who lack sufficient ability to access the full and uncensored internet in a manner that also protects them from repressive surveillance, both in their network traffic and their digital communication. Their focus is on adapting encryption technology to make it easy to use and widely available. For this project, LEAP focused on building the Bitmask VPN service and integrating secure email services to allow for implementation by a wide range of service providers as well as easing the installation and configuration for system administrators who maintain private email servers. Much of the focus was on making email security user friendly and giving clear feedback to the user regarding important security properties of their messages.
When ISP’s implement LEAP, they remove the burden from everyday people to learn and install new technology. As a result, the barrier of entry for everyday people is lowered. By addressing the problem at the service provider level, LEAP’s goal is to promote a healthy ecosystem of federated and secure providers who want to make it easier for the people who use their service to communicate safely.
