The DNSprivacy project seeks to further the provisioning of open and experimental DNS-over-TLS resolution services based on with the features they offer, provide data on the operational realities of DNS-over-TLS and stimulate mainstream DNS service providers to offer open and free DNS privacy services to the general public.
While almost everyone on the internet relies on the Domain Name System (DNS), which translates from user-friendly hostnames to IP addresses, it also leaks a tremendous amount of information about user activity, which puts users under risk of oppressive surveillance and censorship. While newer standards exist that outline the provision of encrypted DNS traffic, the implementation of these services raises many new operational questions and challenges for service providers. This project seeks to further those services along with the features they offer, provide data on the operational realities of DNS-over-TLS and encourage mainstream DNS service providers to offer open, free DNS privacy services to the general public.
