As many international, publicly funded broadcasting agencies, such as the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) or the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), produce news and media content that is blocked or censored by repressive governments, the question of how to reach audiences living in closed environments has become increasingly relevant. Information controls and advanced censorship methods pose constant challenges for media organizations whose content is deemed undesirable by state censors.
These various media agencies are actively working to overcome these challenges and find alternative solutions to make their content accessible in restricted media environments. Within this context, this landscaping report will examine and highlight the work that is currently being done by a number of international broadcasting agencies to fight censorship and advance freedom of expression among their global audiences.
As a result of this report, OTF aims to demonstrate the important role that these anti-censorship efforts play in increasing access to information for citizens living in closed media environments and thus contributing to the Internet freedom and human rights ecosystem.
