The Ford Foundation, one of the world’s largest philanthropic nonprofit organizations, has introduced ‘Internet Freedom’ as a new area of focus. Ford’s Internet Freedom program will address “Inequality in the digital realm,” building off Ford’s broader mission of ‘advancing human achievement’ by tackling social justice issues around the world.

This welcome announcement is exactly the type of development foreseen by Congress in requesting that public Internet freedom funds be “matched, to the maximum extent practicable, by sources other than the United States Government, including from the private sector.”

Given the growing threats to Internet freedom around the globe, Ford’s new push to “advanc[e] equity in the information age” is a welcome sign of the increasing private support for this community.
